At our headquarters in Charlotte, we were regularly treating families driving 30 to 45 minutes from the Lake Norman area.  Those families will now have a more convenient resource at our Cornelius location on Old Jetton Road.

Chamber of Commerce members attended our ribbon cutting ceremony in February. Guests of our open house toured the clinic and saw a demonstration of our FDA cleared medical device used to treat head lice.

Pediatric Hair Solutions Medical Director is Expert Guest on Dr. Radio

Dr. John Fassler, Medical Director of Pediatric Hair Solutions and Lice Clinics of America, was recently a guest on Dr. Radio on Sirius XM. Dr. Fassler appeared on the segment “On Call for Kids” to discuss the super lice epidemic and effective treatment options for head lice.

Pediatrician and radio host Dr. Dan Rauch asked Dr. Fassler commonly asked questions that parents often have about head lice and the hysteria that often surrounds a lice diagnosis.

Dr. Fassler explained that lice are most commonly spread through head-to-head contact and can’t live off their host longer than approximately 24 hours.

While head lice can spread in a school setting, Dr. Fassler says lice is more contagious within a family. Pediatric Hair Solutions recommends all family members of a child diagnosed with head lice be checked as their is a high rate of exposure among family members.

Dr. Fassler also discussed the various treatments for getting rid of head lice. He pointed out that lice are becoming increasingly resistant to commonly used over-the-counter treatments such as RID and Nix. Recent research confirms that the so-called ‘super lice’ have mutated to develop a resistant to the chemicals found in over-the-counter solutions.

Combating super-lice requires a non-toxic approach. Dr. Fassler said manual removal can be effective but is very time consuming and a single missed nit can lead to persistent infestation.

He told the audience the most effective treatments are those offered by Pediatric Hair Solutions and other affiliates of Lice Clinics of America that use the FDA cleared AirAllé™ heated air device. The 30 minute heated air treatment dehydrates lice and their eggs. In combination with pre and post treatment with a non-toxic solution, the process is proven to be 100% effective.

Teenagers and Head Lice: Tips for Parents

Teenagers like to think they are invincible and immune to things such as head lice, but unfortunately they are not. Head lice do not discriminate based on anything, least of all age. That being said, teenagers often take it the hardest when a head lice infestation is discovered. It could be viewed as a social disaster, creepy inconvenience, horribly disgusting, or all of the above! Luckily, there are a few ways to prepare yourself and your teen for the possibility of head lice, hopefully making the situation much less traumatic.

  • Practice lice prevention at home. The more your family knows about head lice and practices regular preventative measures the better prepared you and your teen will be for any outbreak that may happen. Of course, no one wants to deal with the hassle that is head lice, but the more you know, the better equipped you are for an outbreak. Plus the more open you are about discussing head lice and preventative measures the more you can de-mystify this inconvenient bug. If you know that a classmate or teammate has it, be sure to fix long hair tightly in a bun or braid.
  • Everyone is susceptible. Getting lice can be much more traumatic for teens than young children. Often, the social environment for teens is more volatile and unpredictable. It is easy to see how devastating lice can be for teens when at that age anything can be construed as abnormal, unacceptable, or just plain weird. Typically those are the last things a teenager wants to be associated with, which is why it is imperative for you to make clear how “normal” the appearance of lice is. Anyone and everyone is susceptible to a lice infestation. There are no exceptions!
  • Get the community involved. While your teen may not be so excited about you running around the community talking about head lice, it can make quite the difference. If you are comfortable doing so, go to the parents of your teen’s friends and discuss how everyone can contribute to preventing head lice. Also, if your teen’s school doesn’t have a lice policy in place, perhaps it is time to get that ball rolling.

On the chance that your teen does get lice, here are a few suggestions for how to move forward:

  • Stay calm, cool, and collected. As much as possible, you as the parent need to be as calm about head lice as possible for your teen. The teenage years are an emotional rollercoaster, and they’ll need someone to calmly guide them through it.
  • Show support. As if teenage social life wasn’t hard enough, getting lice could potentially be devastating for your teen. Show your support for your teen by being helpful and respectful of their feelings, however dramatic.
  • Get treatment. You can no longer find success with over-the-counter treatment solutions as lice have developed a resistance to them over the years. Luckily, you have a super fast and effective treatment available to you at Pediatric Hair Solutions! In less than an hour, you can be in and out of our clinic, ready to get back to your life before lice. Our healthcare professionals on staff are well equipped to ease the stress of your teen’s lice infestation while quickly eradicating the problem. With a fully effective and complete treatment, your teen will be back to their old self in no time!

Family Reunions: Lice Could Show Up, Whether Invited or Not!

Illustration of a Family Mingling With the Visitors of a Family Gathering

Are you making the trek to any family reunions this year? Or perhaps your family is nearby, and you get together for every holiday. Whether you’re going 10 miles or 1,000 miles, family reunions are a big deal. It can be a fun time for siblings and cousins to reunite and for grandparents to see their grandkids. It’s nice to have the opportunity to reconnect.

However, there could be some unwelcome guests at your family reunion this year, and no, it’s not your crazy uncle or estranged great aunt. It’s head lice! Head lice like to crash parties, especially when you least expect them to show up. At family reunions, there can be a lot of people in one place coming from far and wide, so the chances for head lice are even stronger, but, don’t fear! We have a few tips for you to prevent any spreading of head lice:

  • Pack carefully. This may seem like a given for some, but making sure you pack everything you need for a trip, even just across town, is really important for preventing head lice. Take care that each member of your family has what they need for the family reunion and any other activities that may occur during the trip. Take the season in mind, look at the weather forecast, and consider all the possible activities. The last thing you’ll want to do is need to borrow a possible lice-infested item! Remember to pack any pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, and other miscellaneous things that will be needed for the trip.
  • Avoid head and hair contact. This tip is potentially more difficult for children, so it is important to thoroughly discuss it with them. If they look forward to playing with their cousins at family reunions, they should know to avoid playing with hair, touching heads, or sharing hair accessories and hats. Parents remember not to get too rambunctious with any of your siblings or in-laws!
  • Serious lice prevention. Well, maybe not that serious, but incredibly helpful! We’re referring to our Preventative “No Bugs” Spray and Preventative Lice Treatment Spray. Take one or both of these non-toxic preventative sprays with you on any trip to help prevent head lice. They each have a light scent, are easy to use, and don’t get in the way of having fun.

If you find yourself scratching your head or finding little nits in your child’s hair, then make an appointment at Pediatric Hair Solutions today! Our friendly and experienced healthcare professionals are happy to help you and your family with our tried and true non-toxic treatment.
