When Lice Won’t Leave

“I have treated my daughters twice and am still finding lice!”

“We have tried all the shampoos and can’t get rid of lice!”

“I have used a pharmacist-recommended anti-lice shampoo FOUR times and my child still has lice!”

Head lice that keeps coming back

Sound familiar? If so, you’re not alone. These are comments from just a few of our many clients who turn to us for help after months of battling head lice.

The problem of persistent lice causes extreme stress, lost time at school and work, not to mention the hundreds of dollars spent on treatments that don’t work. At Pediatric Hair Solutions, we have treated over 15,000 children and adults without a single treatment failure.

If you’re struggling with persistent lice, HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW about why common treatments often don’t work and details on more effective solutions.

1. There is a common pattern of lice suppression and resurgence when families use lice shampoos and prescription treatments.

What does that mean? Since lice shampoos only kill live bugs and not their eggs, it’s up to parents to comb out every single lice egg. If just one or two are left behind, it will take about 3 weeks for those left behind eggs to hatch, starting a new cycle of lice infestation.

During those weeks, parents think they have the problem under control, not knowing those eggs are developing into live bugs. This is also a common reason lice are spread to other family members and classmates. In other words, the lice aren’t necessarily coming back, they were never completely gone in the first place.

2. Head lice are increasingly becoming resistant to common over-the-counter treatments. A recent study shows 99% of head lice have developed a genetic mutation allowing them to resist to chemical treatments. As chemical treatments become more and more potent, lice have developed a resistance to the toxic chemicals.

The result? Many over-the-counter treatments have an effectiveness rate as low as 20%, no matter how many times you use them.

This is a common reason for persistent lice infestations and can only be battled with non-chemical solutions.

3. Non-toxic treatment solutions are the best way to effectively treat lice. Natural products and treatment modalities, such as the non-toxic  treatment solutions used at Pediatric Hair Solutions, kill lice and their eggs. Lice cannot become resistant to natural solutions so this is the best way to battle the bugs.

For a 100% effective and guaranteed solution, we recommend our 3-step process which includes natural pre-treatment solution, a 30-minute treatment with a medical device and post treatment. This process guarantees your child will not be re-infested as it covers the span of the 21 day lifecycle of lice.

Pediatric Hair Solutions in the Community

At Pediatric Hair Solutions, we believe in giving back to the many communities we serve. This December in Charlotte, we were proud to support a program that provides Christmas gifts to less fortunate families in the Charlotte area. The Explorer Christmas Project is a partnership between the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the CMPD Police Explorers.

IMG_0808Pediatric Hair Solutions owner, Sheila Fassler, presented a check for 500 dollars at a recent fundraising event sponsored by The Bob and Sheri Show and 107.9 The Link.

As part of the Explorer project, the CMPD partners with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools guidance counselors and teachers in elementary schools to identify children and their families who are in need of assistance during the Christmas season. To qualify for the program, these children must be eligible to receive free or reduced lunch at school. In addition, CMPD Officers and CFD Firefighters refer families with emergency situations.

The goal is for each child to receive at least three gifts, and provide each family with a gift card to a local grocery store to purchase a Christmas Dinner. If you would like to find out more about the CMPD Explorer Project or donate yourself, click here.

Pediatric Hair Solutions Medical Director is Expert Guest on Dr. Radio

Dr. John Fassler, Medical Director of Pediatric Hair Solutions and Lice Clinics of America, was recently a guest on Dr. Radio on Sirius XM. Dr. Fassler appeared on the segment “On Call for Kids” to discuss the super lice epidemic and effective treatment options for head lice.

super lice doctor radio

Pediatrician and radio host Dr. Dan Rauch asked Dr. Fassler commonly asked questions that parents often have about head lice and the hysteria that often surrounds a lice diagnosis.

Dr. Fassler explained that lice are most commonly spread through head-to-head contact and can’t live off their host longer than approximately 24 hours.

While head lice can spread in a school setting, Dr. Fassler says lice is more contagious within a family. Pediatric Hair Solutions recommends all family members of a child diagnosed with head lice be checked as their is a high rate of exposure among family members.

Dr. Fassler also discussed the various treatments for getting rid of head lice. He pointed out that lice are becoming increasingly resistant to commonly used over-the-counter treatments such as RID and Nix. Recent research confirms that the so-called ‘super lice’ have mutated to develop a resistant to the chemicals found in over-the-counter solutions.

Combating super-lice requires a non-toxic approach. Dr. Fassler said manual removal can be effective but is very time consuming and a single missed nit can lead to persistent infestation.

He told the audience the most effective treatments are those offered by Pediatric Hair Solutions and other affiliates of Lice Clinics of America that use the FDA cleared AirAllé™ heated air device. The 30 minute heated air treatment dehydrates lice and their eggs. In combination with pre and post treatment with a non-toxic solution, the process is proven to be 100% effective.

Stay Lice-Free: Tips for College Students

Treating lice in college students

Do you have a child heading off to college soon? Or are you a college student yourself, about to move into your dorm? Well, chances are, in between registering for classes and buying textbooks and dorm room furnishings, you haven’t thought about how to protect yourself against head lice. Head lice in college, you ask?

As we’ve mentioned before, head lice do not discriminate! Students who live in dorms are in relatively close proximity to other people all the time, and the potential for sharing items is very high. These are all things head lice love! Don’t start worrying too much, though. Here are a few tips to help protect against head lice in college:

  • Keep clothing and laundry separate between roommates. This is a great way to stop lice from spreading via clothing. Although head lice do not live very long off the human head, there is still a chance for them to spread. Every roommate should have a separate closet, if possible, and a separate laundry hamper.
  • Avoid sharing anything that touches the head. This includes hats, scarves, hoodies, pillows, headphones, hair accessories, and anything else that comes in contact with your head. Also, avoid direct head-to-head contact as much as possible, as this is the most common way head lice are spread. Taking a roomie selfie? Watch out for head-to-head contact, it’s harder than you think!
  • Take extra care at the gym. The gym is a place where a lot of people are sharing the same facility, so the chances of spreading head lice, while slim, are still present. Simply bring your own towel as much as possible and keep your items secured in a locker.

In the chance that you or your roommate discover head lice, there are a few things you should do right away:

  • Don’t panic. Head lice infestations are very treatable and as long as you take the precautions listed above, you will not spread the head lice.
  • You and your roommate should both get treatment. No matter who actually discovers the infestation, it is our recommendation that all roommates get treatment or at least a professional check for head lice. We recommend the same for families, or anyone living in the same space.
  • Let your other floormates and classmates know. Although there are many who still stigmatize head lice as only affecting certain people or people with certain habits, it is important to know that head lice do not discriminate in any way – anyone can get them! This is why it’s so important to spread the word. If you would prefer to do so anonymously, we offer Lice Alerts, a free and anonymous way to alert people who may have been exposed.

College should be an amazing experience full of learning, fun, and friendship. Don’t let head lice get in the way! If you or someone you know needs treatment or a check for head lice, stop by your local Pediatric Hair Solutions clinic. We specialize in fast, efficient, and non-toxic lice treatment that you can count on.
