Family Reunions: Lice Could Show Up, Whether Invited or Not!

Are you making the trek to any family reunions this year? Or perhaps your family is nearby, and you get together for every holiday. However, there could be some unwelcome guests at your family reunion this year, and no, it’s not your crazy uncle or estranged great aunt. It’s head lice! Head lice like to crash parties, especially when you least expect them to show up. At family reunions, there can be a lot of people in one place coming from far and wide, so the chances for head lice are even stronger, but, don’t fear! We have a few tips for you to prevent any spreading of head lice:

• Pack carefully. This may seem like a given for some, but making sure you pack everything you need for a trip, even just across town, is really important for preventing head lice. Take care that each member of your family has what they need for the family reunion and any other activities that may occur during the trip. Take the season in mind, look at the weather forecast, and consider all the possible activities. The last thing you’ll want to do is need to borrow a possible lice-infested item! Remember to pack any pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, and other miscellaneous things that will be needed for the trip.
• Avoid head and hair contact. This tip is potentially more difficult for children, so it is important to thoroughly discuss it with them. If they look forward to playing with their cousins at family reunions, they should know to avoid playing with hair, touching heads, or sharing hair accessories and hats. Parents remember not to get too rambunctious with any of your siblings or in-laws!
