Save Time, Stress and Money and Avoid Chemicals During a Head Lice Outbreak

Without a doubt, the most common call we receive at Pediatric Hair Solutions is from a frustrated parent who has been using an over-the-counter (OTC) head lice treatment on their child with no success. Many of them have been fighting head lice for several weeks (sometimes months) and it has now spread to other family members. Their question is obvious, “why don’t these over-the-counter head lice treatments work?”

What do you do if you happen to find evidence of head lice in your child’s hair? Have you noticed any excessive head scratching and complaints of itchiness? Perhaps you spotted some teardrop shaped specks or saw something moving through the hair? It’s okay, lice happens to everyone and it can be treated. But please allow us to save you some time and money and suggest you skip the trip to the drug store to purchase an over-the-counter (OTC) head lice treatment.

While several over-the-counter head lice treatments have received promotion by some, they are ultimately not effective for treating head lice. A 2016 study found 98% percent of head lice have developed resistance to most common OTC treatments.  We can corroborate that finding; the vast majority of our clients have tried one or more of the over-the-counter head lice treatments and still have live bugs and nits (eggs) before calling us.

With over 20 years of experience as healthcare professionals and ten years as head lice experts, we have witnessed first-hand the ineffectiveness of over-the-counter head lice treatments. We have treated hundreds of families that have attempted all the home remedies and every over-the-counter treatment they could get their hands on, and yet they were still unable to get the lice outbreak under control. Many of them have stated they wished they had merely come to us in the first place and it would have saved them a bit of time, stress, money and without the use of harsh chemicals!

“My daughter and I went for the complete service. Her lice was seriously un-killable! I had tried everything, even an RX from the pediatrician, but they kept coming back! This service was excellent – they were very sweet, but serious about killing these demonic bugs. They shared a plethora of up-to-date knowledge on lice, and they were extremely thorough while blowing out and combing our hair. It was actually really relaxing and felt nice! I’m so happy to be rid of this “super” lice, and I am also more knowledgeable about treatment and prevention.”

“They have gone above and beyond for my family during the treatment process. We have bought countless over the counter treatments that have not worked. I wish I would have known about this place sooner.”

So why don’t over-the-counter head lice treatments work?

OTC lice treatment shampoos are only targeted to kill adult and adolescent lice, leaving out nits and young nymphs. Some studies have shown 98% of lice have developed resistance to over-the-counter and prescription treatments, resulting in an effectiveness rate as low as 20%. This resistance is typical of any insect being targeted by pesticides, and it is common in agriculture.

What about “home remedies”?

Sure, home nit-picking is always an option, but you will need to be prepared to set aside a few hours each day (per child) for the next two to three weeks to eradicate the problem. Only one missed egg will start the infestation over again. We DO NOT recommend some other treatment options you may find on the internet. Pouring Listerine, alcohol, vinegar, kerosene, or similar liquids on your child’s head is not only ineffective – it is dangerous and may irritate your scalp or damage your hair.

What’s a better solution?

Unlike over-the-counter head lice treatments, we use a non-chemical approach to killing lice and nits that is safe and effective. Parents who choose this option are searching for the convenience of medically trained professionals to quickly and effectively eradicate head lice, without the need for combing.

“We do not use chemicals to kill the bug, we kill the bug by suffocation. We then use the FloSonix heated air device to dehydrate the eggs so there is nothing left to hatch, eliminating the need for combing,” says  Pediatric Hair Solutions President/Owner Sheila Fassler, RN. “It is the safest and most efficient way to eliminate a case of head lice. We also check all household members and provide plenty of education to help dispel the many myths and untruths that circulate about lice.” Treatment options using our heated air medical device come with a 30 day, 100% guarantee.
